- What used to happen to people with diabetes before insulin?
- What organ was found to be responsible for insulin production?
- What were early treatment options that doctors devised for people with diabetes?
- Play the History of Insulin Part II, then ask students:
- The pancreases of what two animals were originally used to extract insulin?
- What was the primary problem with initial insulin extracts?
- After the discovery of purified insulin, why wasn't everyone with diabetes cured?
- Play the History of Insulin Part III, then ask students:
- Is insulin still being made using the pancreases of animals?
- How is insulin made today?
Let students know that in the next lesson, they will be creating insulin in a virtual laboratory using today's DNA technology.
