Overview

In this lesson, students analyze the results of the Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) to become aware of ways that people can reduce

their chances of, or delay the onset of, Type 2 diabetes.

 

Enduring Understandings

  • Among people who are at risk for but do not have Type 2 diabetes, a scientific study shows that making positive changes to lifestyle, including improving the diet, increasing physical activity, and losing excess weight, reduces the risk that they will develop Type 2 diabetes.

 

Outcomes and Indicators of Success

By the end of this lesson, students should be able to:

  • Explain that changes in lifestyle related to diet, exercise, and body weight can reduce a person’s risk for getting Type 2 diabetes. They will demonstrate their understanding by drawing conclusions from graphs, comparing results from different ethnic groups, and describing why the results from a scientific study make the conclusions more valid.

 

This Lesson in part has been provided by the Diabetes Education in Tribal Schools (DETS)Curriculum, collaboratively developed by: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Indian Health Service (IHS), Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCU), and the Tribal Leaders Diabetes Committee. 

 

 


Ask the students:

  1. “Based on the DPP study, what can American Indians and Alaska Natives and other people do to reduce their risk for developing Type 2 diabetes?”
    • If students understand the results of the DPP, they should state that people should make positive changes in lifestyle, including increasing physical activity, eating a healthy diet, and losing weight.
