Ask students to think about their homes and schools, and come up with something they’d like to change about either their school or community. Either pair and share or share with the whole group, and write down student ideas.
Tell students that they will be learning about ways they can make a difference or create change. Show the visuals for proactive and reactive. Ask students to come up with examples of each type of action. Then show students the visuals for collective action and individual action. Ask students to come up with ways they have done or seen both of these actions in their lives.

In this activity, students learn the types of action strategies they might take to make a difference in their communities. After defining terms, students play a relay race to sort examples of action strategies. |

Ask students which one they would most realistically do when they get home, and why. Pair and share, write in journals, or share with the group. If they needed help to accomplish any of the action strategies, who could they go to? (Parent/guardian, teacher, principal, etc.) |
