Entry Task:
Imagine that people in your community are suddenly catching a mysterious disease that causes fevers. How will you go about tracking down the cause and identifying the way that the disease is transmitted between people? |

Divide the class into groups.
Make copies of the "Early Malaria Scientists" document, then cut and fold each scientists photo so that groups can draw their researcher out of a hat.
Student groups will research on of the following scientists:
Student groups have one full class period to research their early scientist and choose how they'd like to present their findings to the class on the following day. You can give groups the opportunity to be creative... they could do a skit, create a video or slideshow, create a poem, song/rap, poster, etc.
Encourage students to try to get a feeling for their chosen scientist and the times they lived in. They should gather material on the person’s life and research, and presentations (whichever format) should include:

At the end of presentations, list the scientists that were discussed on the board. Have students copy this list on their exit slip and then write down at least one fact that they learned about each scientist. |
